Hand

Child
support agency set up by Resurrection Hour Bible Church
International a non profitable organization committed to
pioneering social reformation through poverty
alleviation. The ideals of Resurrection Hour Bible
Church are expressed through various vehicles for social
change and Hand for God is one of such.
Vision
The recent UN Word Summit for children brought home the
chilling realization that 40,000 children die needlessly
each day. Reports from Nigeria depict daily lives
Parents and Guardians striving helplessly and hopelessly
to care for children in the face of poverty, inadequate
childcare structures, war and HIV/AIDS.
Against
this backdrop, Hand for God seeks to complement
government and private efforts by initiating ways to and
raising funds build core services and technical capacity
in the area childhood care. Hand for God will promote
the dignity and enhance the future of children through
positive exposure, association and continuing
relationships.

Rescue
a Child
So
many children presently live in environments unsuitable
for optimal child development. These include drug zones,
brothels and criminal hideouts. These RESCUE a Child
Mission will bring relief to children traumatized
psychologically and physically by providing alternative
accommodation for them in an environment conducive to
their well-being.
Sponsor
A Child
In
our bid to empower children through education, Hand for
God seeks to complement already existing efforts by
creating an awareness among the privileged in society
and getting them to sponsor the education of
disadvantage children without taking on the
responsibility of parenthood.
Establishing
A School
Hand
of God will complement government to provide free
education for all children, by establishing, equipping
and running schools especially at the grassroots level.
Adopt
A Child
Undisputed,
the family is the social unit upon which societies are
built and maintained and it is the primary environment
in which human development takes place. Consequently,
the most effective actions in caring for our
disadvantaged children must come from within the context
of our homes, our lives and our hearts.
Hand
for God therefore aims at providing abandoned,
disadvantaged children, the family environment that
offers love, care and the nurturing they need to grow
and develop to their fullest potential. This expands the
concept of childcare beyond the ambits of orphanages to
placement in homes.
Living
in their midst
Your
typical day starts at table in the company of your
children. After chit chats over breakfast, they all hop
into the
car for school, on your way through the streets of
Lagos, the stark reality of Lagos existence hits you and
gradually begins to cast a double shadow on your co-
existence.
The
traffic builds up barely a few yards from home and then
suddenly the street is lace with children begging for
alms. Instinctively you check to ensure your car doors
are locked.
At
the turn of the street by your office junction is the
familiar sight of a woman roasting “Boli” (plantain)
with a poorly fed child strapped to her back, exposed to
the burning heat of the sun.
At
lunch time you take a trip to your favorites hide out
with your colleague and the topic over meal, is the
increasing number of child destitute
who constitute a social menace.
On
your way home, at the close of a busy day, as you
reflect on the events of the day, the vivid pictures of
distressed children linger in your mind. What can be
done to alleviate the plight of these children? What can
be done to break this cycle of poverty/
We
at Hand for God believe you can make a difference. We
believe in changing the destiny of children one at a
time. we believe that as we link our hands with your in
community service, we can offer destitute children help
and hope.
Reducing
Childhood Mortality in Nigeria
The
high rate of childhood mortality in Nigeria continues to
be a source of concern to a lot of people.
According
to World Bank report on Nigeria (1996) Nigeria has an
infant mortality rate of 91 compared to Zimbabwe- 47,
Kenya 66 and Ghana 91. It is clear that although there
has been global progress in addressing the major causes
of child death, the impact is not quite felt in Nigeria.
Much
has been said recently about the necessity to address
more vigorously the health needs of children
particularly those from the poorer spectrum of our
society.
The
specific causes of the deaths among children less than
five years old are no mystery. Seventy percent of
more deaths are caused by acute respiratory infections,
diarrhea, malaria and measles in combination with
malnutrition. Nigeria has a diarrhea prevalence
of 17.9 (World Bank report on Nigeria, 1996).
To
make any significant progress in reducing childhood
mortality in Nigeria high priority attention must be
given to the control of infectious disease among
children and particularly children less than five years
old the age group where the burden of diseases and
deaths are concentrate.
In
the recent past, several governments have directed
resources to the provision of Primary Health Services at
grass root level. Breast-feeding and immunization of
children against polio, measles, whooping cough,
tuberculosis, diphtheria and tetanus, have been targeted
to receive special attention in principle. However,
effective implementation continues to be the bane of
those laudable policies.
Projections
based on the analysis of the global burden of disease
indicate that these condition will continue to be major
contributors to the child deaths even in the year 2020,
unless significantly greater efforts are made to
controls them.
